What brass changes in a shower head

Brass is a copper and zinc alloy that is cast or forged and then machined, so the finished part is dense, rigid and dimensionally stable when hot water runs through it. The practical difference a buyer notices first is threads: a brass inlet is a cut metal thread, so it survives repeated fitting, over-tightening by a plumber and the occasional wrench. A molded plastic inlet is normally reinforced with a metal insert for the same reason, which is why a good ABS head still has a metal nut at the hose end.

The second difference is the finish. Chrome on brass is nickel and chrome deposited straight onto metal. Chrome on ABS needs an etch and a conductive strike before plating can start, and both routes give a bright finish, but brass tolerates a thicker deposit and takes brushed and PVD tones more evenly across a large flat face. Brass also conducts heat, so a brass head feels cold at the first touch and warm after a minute of use, which some hotel buyers like and some retail buyers do not.

When brass is worth the extra cost, and when it is not

Brass earns its price where the fitting takes physical load or heavy cleaning. Wall arms and elbows carry the weight of a large rain head and are levered every time the head is aimed. Mixers and valve bodies hold line pressure, so they are brass almost everywhere. Hotel, gym and specification work adds strong cleaning chemicals and thousands of guest cycles a year, and a heavier fitting is also harder to remove and walk away with.

Plated ABS wins in the places brass loses. A hand shower is held for the length of a shower, so weight is a comfort problem rather than a quality signal, and that is why the 75 handheld model codes in the ZHONGHE catalog are plated ABS. Retail price points, colour work, transparent filter chambers and kids products all need molded plastic. The honest summary is that material follows the job, not a ranking.

• Filter heads with a visible cartridge chamber: ABS and PC, because the chamber has to be transparent
• Coloured, printed or character products: ABS, because brass cannot be moulded in colour

Lead, alloys and the paperwork behind them

Some markets regulate lead in fittings that touch drinking water, and the alloy is the thing that decides whether a part meets that rule. A shower head is treated differently from a kitchen tap in most of those rules, and the scope is not the same in every market, so the question belongs in the RFQ rather than in a general statement. Where a market requires it, low-lead or lead-free brass is used and the alloy is written into the specification.

State the destination market, the channel and whether your listing will make a drinking-water claim, and the testing can be scoped before sampling instead of after the artwork is printed. How a brass price is built, and how to order

A brass quotation is driven by metal weight first, because brass is bought by the kilogram and the alloy price moves. After that come the forming route, the machining time, the polishing labour, which is the largest hidden cost on a mirror-polished part, and finally the plating and the packaging. Because the raw material is a traded commodity, a brass price is normally held for a shorter window than a plastic one, so ask for the validity period in writing.

To order, send a drawing or a photo, the finish, the thread standard, the target flow at a stated pressure, the packaging format and the quantity per model.
