Digital and Smart Shower Heads: Displays, Timers and Limits

Two very different products share the word smart

The first kind is self-powered. Water turns a small turbine inside the head, the turbine drives a generator, and the generator lights an LED and drives a small display. There is no battery, no charging, no pairing and no app. The user fits it like any other head and it works. That is the version that sells in volume, because nothing about it can go flat in a drawer or fail a pairing at eight in the morning.

The second kind is a connected product: a Bluetooth speaker in the head, or a head that talks to a phone. It needs a rechargeable battery, a radio and an approval file, and it changes the importer's paperwork rather than the plumbing. Both are supplied by ZHONGHE, but they are quoted, sampled and approved on different tracks, so decide which one the programme is before the first sample round.

How the hydro-powered display works, and what it can honestly say

The turbine sits in the flow behind the face, so the display comes on with the water and goes off with it. The sensor reads the water at the head, which is where the user actually feels it, and that is a genuine advantage over a mixer-mounted gauge. The reading is still an indication: it shifts with flow rate, with a long cold pipe run and with a cold bathroom, so treat the printed figure as a guide and confirm the tolerance for your listing before it goes on the box.

Colour is the part shoppers respond to. A three-colour head maps blue, green and red to temperature bands, which reads as useful information for families with young children or older users. A seven-colour head cycles for effect and says nothing about temperature. Sell each one for what it is. What is realistic in the head, and what belongs in the valve

Head-side electronics are limited by the power a small turbine can make and by the space behind a face plate. Realistic today: temperature readout, colour bands, elapsed time, litres used, a low-flow warning, and a backlight. Each one is a display of something the water is already doing.

Anything that controls the water belongs in the valve, not in the head. Setting a temperature, holding it against pressure changes, remembering a user preference or shutting off automatically all require a mixing valve with its own power and actuator, which is a bathroom fixture rather than a shower head. Buyers who want that outcome should specify a thermostatic or digital valve behind the wall and a plain head in front of it, and ZHONGHE supplies both sides of that set.

Compliance and claims discipline

A hydro-powered display has no battery and no radio, which keeps it out of the radio and battery transport rules, though the electronics still fall under the general electromagnetic compatibility and product safety expectations of the destination market. Add a radio or a cell and the file grows: EU radio equipment rules and the CE marking, FCC authorisation and an identifier printed on the product or the box for the United States, and UN38.3 test documents before a lithium cell can travel. Raise the destination market in the RFQ, because the marks need space on the artwork.

Claims are where these products get sellers into trouble. Do not print an accuracy figure that has not been measured on the sample, do not describe a colour change as scald protection, and do not attach a health, skin or hair benefit to any shower product.
