The Comparison at a Glance
Shower products are rarely made of one material. A typical hand shower is a molded ABS body with a chrome-plated surface, a rubber nozzle face, an internal water path with several seals, and sometimes a PC handle or a stainless face plate. The useful question is not which material is best in the abstract, but which material belongs in which part.

Why Hand Showers Are Plated ABS
ABS, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, is impact-resistant, dimensionally stable, and an unusually good base for chrome electroplating. Those three properties are exactly what a hand shower needs. It molds into the complex internal water paths and mode chambers a modern head requires, it survives being dropped in a tray, and the plated surface is visually indistinguishable from plated metal to anyone who is not weighing it.
Weight is the underrated argument. A brass hand shower is heavy to hold at arm's length while rinsing hair, and heavier still for a child or for a stylist working through a shift. It also puts more load on the hose and the holder, which is why holders and hoses are specified alongside the head. The market settled on plated ABS for hand showers because it is the right answer, not the cheap one.
Where a body is molded in transparent PC, that is a deliberate choice for filter models: it lets the user see the cartridge and judge when to change it, which is a genuine function rather than styling. Which to Choose
For a hand shower, choose plated ABS and spend your attention on the plating rather than the substrate. Under a strong light at a shallow angle, look for pinholes, cloudiness, orange peel texture, blistering near the injection gate, and thin coverage on edges and inside corners. That inspection tells you far more about how the product will age than any material name on the packaging. For corrosion resistance, ask for a salt spray report on the specific finish.
For a fixed head, brass is a reasonable choice and often the default, because the head hangs from a threaded arm rather than a hand and the extra weight costs you nothing. Brass threads also tolerate wrench tightening, which matters at a tapered NPT arm connection where sealing depends on thread interference. The shower arm itself should be metal regardless of what the head is made of.
Stainless steel is worth choosing for a face plate, where it gives a flat, bright surface that resists marking and does not depend on plating adhesion. Treat a claim of a full stainless shower head more carefully: check whether it means the shell, the face plate, or a decorative cover, and ask which grade.
