Fitment and thread standards in the United States

The United States is the one large market where the shower arm does not use the thread the rest of the world uses. Arms typically carry 1/2 inch NPT, a tapered thread that seals by interference with PTFE tape or pipe sealant, while hand showers, hoses and holders are built on G1/2 parallel thread. The two engage far enough to feel right and then leak, so the conversion has to be designed in rather than left to the installer. On a hand shower set the conversion point is the supply end of the hose or a small adapter at the arm; on a fixed overhead head it is the ball joint inlet.
