Why This Joint Leaks
The connection between a hand shower and its hose is a G1/2 parallel thread, and parallel threads do not seal on the thread. Tightening the nut only pulls two faces together. The seal is made by a flat rubber washer squeezed between them, or by a cone nut wedging into a matching seat in the head inlet. Every leak here is a sealing-face problem until proven otherwise.
Rubber washers harden, flatten, crack, and shrink with heat cycling and age, so a washer that sealed for three years can start weeping in a week. They cost almost nothing and are the right first thing to change. It is also common for a washer to be missing after someone took the head off to clean it, or for two to end up stacked in one nut, which seals worse than one. The other causes are a cone that is not seated square, thread damage from a previous fit, and water actually running down from the mixer end and appearing at the lowest point.
Finding and Fixing the Leak
Work dry. A wet joint hides where the water is really coming from, so dry everything first and watch which surface wets first.
- Turn the shower off and dry the head, both hose nuts, and the wall outlet with a cloth.
- Run the shower briefly, then look at each joint. Water appearing at the head nut first means this joint; water tracking down the hose from above means the mixer end.
- Turn the mixer off and unscrew the head by hand, anticlockwise, using a cloth for grip. Do not use pliers on a plastic nut.
- Look inside the hose nut, find the flat rubber washer or the cone, and check whether two washers are stacked, which happens more often than people expect.
- Replace the washer if it is hard, flattened, cracked, glazed, or torn. Fit exactly one, sitting flat and fully home rather than tilted on a rim.
- Inspect the threads on the head inlet and inside the nut with a light, looking for flattened crests, a diagonal gouge, or shaved plastic that indicates cross-threading.
- Refit by hand, letting the nut turn freely for at least two full turns before it meets resistance. If it binds in the first turn, back it off completely and start again.
- Tighten hand-tight only, then run the water and watch the joint for a full minute, since a slow weep can take thirty seconds to appear.
- If it still leaks with a new, correctly seated washer, replace the hose. The nut or cone is damaged and no washer compensates for that.
Cross-Threading, and How to Avoid It
Cross-threading is what happens when a nut starts at an angle and cuts a second, wrong path across the existing thread. It is the one failure at this joint that cannot be repaired in place, and plastic nuts are especially vulnerable. Once the crests are flattened the joint will not seal reliably again, however many washers go into it.
The prevention is a habit rather than a technique. Present the nut square, turn it anticlockwise first until you feel it drop into the start of the thread, then turn clockwise. It should spin freely with fingertip pressure for several turns, and any resistance in the first turn means it is not aligned. Nothing in this joint should ever need force, and a wrench buys no extra sealing because the washer does the work. A wrench belongs here only on an old nut corroded solid, wrapped in cloth to protect the plating.
When to Replace the Hose
Replace the hose rather than chasing the leak when the cone or nut is visibly deformed, when the thread is stripped, when it weeps along its length rather than at an end, or when an interlocked metal hose has opened up at a kink. A split inner liner sometimes leaks only under pressure and looks perfectly fine when dry, which is a confusing failure worth knowing about.
Match three things when you buy: the length, the nut types at each end, and the thread standard. Standard retail lengths are 59 inch, about 1.5 metres, and 79 inch, about 2 metres. Longer hoses give more reach for washing a child or a dog but sag and kink more easily. Both ends are normally G1/2, with a conical nut at the head and a hex or flat nut with a washer at the mixer.
Construction changes how a hose behaves over time. Interlocked metal hoses give the traditional look and a robust feel, while smooth PVC hoses with a chrome stripe or a braided sleeve are lighter and less prone to kinking.
