Four Packaging Formats and What They Cost in Volume

Packaging format is a freight decision as much as a marketing one. The same shower head can ship in a colour box built for shelf presence, a brown box built for a courier network, a blister card built for a pegboard, or a bulk carton for an importer who repacks downstream. The product is identical and the cubic metres per unit are not.

The numeric columns below are deliberately unfilled. Unit box dimensions and units per master carton are model and packaging specific, and they are confirmed against the dieline in the quotation. What is general is the arithmetic you run once those numbers exist.

Computing CBM

Cubic metres, written CBM, is the unit sea freight is planned and often priced in. One carton's CBM is its length times width times height in metres, using outside dimensions. A shipment's CBM is the carton CBM times the carton count. The arithmetic fails only when someone measures in centimetres and forgets to divide by a million.

Two derived numbers do the real work. Volume per unit is carton CBM divided by units per carton, which lets you compare packaging formats honestly. Cartons per container is usable container volume divided by carton CBM, rounded down.

Weight is the second constraint and rarely the binding one. Compute gross weight per carton as unit weight times units per carton plus packaging, then multiply by the carton count. For shower products the result sits well under the payload limit, which means volume is what you optimise and better internal protection usually costs nothing in freight.

Container Capacities, Pallets and Floor Loading

Usable volume is always below the geometric internal volume of a container, once stowage, gaps, door clearance and carton shape are counted. The figures below are the planning numbers commonly used in this trade, and they should be confirmed with your forwarder for the lane and equipment actually booked.

Pallets are the other volume decision. Floor loading fits more cartons because it uses the full height and leaves no gaps between footprints, at the cost of slower handling. Palletised cargo loses roughly 10 to 15 percent of usable volume and buys back speed and a lower damage rate. Many retail distribution centres simply require pallets, in which case the pallet size, commonly 1200 x 1000 mm or 1200 x 800 mm, belongs in the RFQ.

A Worked Example With Example Numbers

Every number in the table below is an illustration chosen to make the arithmetic readable. None is a ZHONGHE carton specification and none should be used for a booking. Replace them with the confirmed carton specification for your model before quoting freight.

The conclusion is the part worth keeping. On these example figures a 20 ft container fills on volume at under four tonnes of cargo, which is the normal pattern here. Packaging format, not product weight, is the freight lever.

Labels and Carton Marks

Marking is where planning meets the receiving warehouse. A carton that cannot be identified without opening it, or a barcode that will not scan, stops the goods moving as surely as a quality defect does. Agree the marks at RFQ stage and approve them from a printed proof.

  1. Unit box: brand artwork, model, colour, and an EAN-13 or UPC-A barcode with its quiet zone and enough contrast to scan reliably.
  2. Master carton main mark: buyer name, purchase order number, model, quantity, carton number as x of y, and country of origin.
  3. Master carton side mark: net weight, gross weight, carton dimensions and any handling symbols the lane requires.
  4. Batch or date coding: decide whether it goes on the unit box, the master carton or both, before anything is printed.
  5. Pallet marking: a pallet identification label where the warehouse scans pallets, and ISPM 15 marking if wooden pallets are used.
  6. Approve a printed proof of every printed surface, and scan a printed barcode rather than the artwork file.
