What the Button Does

A stop button is a small push valve sitting in the water path between the inlet and the spray face. Pressing it closes most of that path so the spray drops to a trickle; pressing it again reopens it. On a handheld head the button usually sits on a chrome band at the top of the handle, on the body, or on the side of the head, and it is often marked with the word stop.

It is a convenience control, not a shut-off valve, and that distinction is worth holding on to. The mixer stays open and pressure stays on the hose behind the button. What you gain is the ability to pause the spray without touching the mixer, which means the temperature setting is preserved and you are not fiddling with a hot control with soap in your eyes.

The typical uses are the obvious ones: soaping or shampooing, shaving, washing a child or a dog, and cleaning the shower enclosure. In salons the same control gets used dozens of times in a shift, which is why it is a standard request on backwash units. Using It Well

There is not much to learn, but a few habits make the feature work better and last longer.

  1. Set the mixer to the temperature you want before pausing, since the button preserves the setting rather than creating one.
  2. Press the button once to pause. Expect a trickle rather than silence: that residual flow is designed in.
  3. Point the head into the tray or at the wall while paused, so the trickle is not running down your back or onto the floor.
  4. Press again to resume, and check the temperature with a hand before stepping under if your mixer is not thermostatic.
  5. Use the button rather than the mixer for short pauses, and the mixer for anything longer than a couple of minutes.
  6. Do not hold the button pressed or force it if it sticks. It is a small valve with an O-ring, and force is what breaks it.
  7. Keep the button area clean, since soap film and scale around the collar are what make a button start to feel gritty.
  8. If the head starts dripping heavily when paused rather than trickling, the internal seal is worn, and that is a replacement rather than a repair.

Why It Never Shuts Off Completely

The residual trickle is the question everyone asks, and the answer is deliberate design. A hand shower that shut its flow completely against a running mixer would pressure-lock the hose and the valve behind it, holding full supply pressure in a flexible hose and against mixer components that are not intended to sit closed. Leaving a small path open protects that plumbing. It also gives you a visible signal that the water is still on, which matters more than it sounds when you walk away from a paused shower.

If you genuinely want a full shut-off, that belongs elsewhere in the system: at the mixer itself, or with a shut-off valve fitted at the hose end. Those are plumbing-side functions in most markets, and a manual that describes a stop button as a shut-off valve is describing the product wrongly.

Thermostatic mixers deserve a note. They hold a set temperature and respond to changes in flow, so pausing at the head can make them hunt briefly when flow resumes, and some react to the restricted flow while paused. That is normal behaviour rather than a fault in either component. With a plain manual mixer, the risk is different: a pause changes the balance in the pipework, so temperature can shift when the flow returns. Check with a hand before stepping back under, especially with children.

Does It Actually Save Water

Yes, in proportion to how long you pause. A conventional shower head runs around 12 litres per minute, so a 10 minute shower is roughly 100 to 120 litres, and pausing for two minutes while you shampoo saves something on the order of 20 litres less the trickle. In a household that is modest but real; across a hotel or a gym, multiplied by every shower every day, it becomes a line on a bill.

The larger saving is usually energy rather than water, because most of the cost of a shower is heating it. A pause that saves 20 litres of mixed water saves the gas or electricity that would have heated most of it. That is why a pause button is a standard specification item on commercial programs alongside a water-saving flow specification, which on selected specifications ZHONGHE has measured at roughly 50 to 70 percent lower flow than a non-saving model at a bench pressure of 0.3MPa.
