Why Bench Testing a Sample Pays for Itself

A specification describes intent. A sample is the only evidence of what will actually arrive. Every recurring complaint in this category, from a drip at the hose to a selector that no longer clicks, is visible on a sample before a container is booked, and each one costs a fraction of what it costs after landing. The point of a sample test is not to duplicate a laboratory, it is to find the problems that a laboratory would not look for anyway.

Do it against a written checklist and record numbers rather than impressions. A note reading "flow 6.4 L/min at 0.3MPa, spray even, no weep after 10 minutes" settles a later production argument. A note reading "felt good" settles nothing. Photograph the sample from several angles and keep the approved unit sealed and labelled, so a disputed shipment can be compared against a physical reference.

The Sample Test Sequence

Work through these in order and write down what you find at each step. Later steps assume the earlier ones passed.

  1. Check the thread first, on the actual fitting from the destination market rather than a generic one. G1/2 measures about 27 mm across the thread crests. Hand-start it: a correct match turns freely for several full turns, and anything that binds in the first turn is wrong and must not be forced.
  2. Assemble with the intended washer and pressurise. Hold the head with the spray face vertical, so water finding a seal runs visibly rather than hiding in the bowl of the head, and watch every joint for at least ten minutes.
  3. Measure flow into a jug at a stated pressure and record both figures together. A flow number without its test pressure is meaningless; ZHONGHE measures on a bench at 0.3MPa, so ask for readings at your market's pressure too if that differs a lot.
  4. Photograph the spray pattern from the front and the side at that pressure, checking for stray jets, dry zones, and lopsided coverage.
  5. Cycle the mode selector through its full sequence repeatedly, several hundred times if you have the patience, and confirm each position still lines up with its printed label and still gives a positive detent.
  6. Check for cross-talk between modes: with one zone selected, look for water weeping from the zones that should be closed. This passes a simple on-off test and shows up as dripping in the field.
  7. Press any stop button through many cycles. Confirm it reduces flow to a trickle rather than shutting hard, and that it returns cleanly. A residual trickle is deliberate on this kind of valve.
  8. Inspect the plating under strong directional light at a shallow angle, looking for pinholes, cloudiness, orange peel, blistering near the gate, and thin coverage on edges and inside corners.
  9. Dismantle what is meant to be user-serviceable, such as a filter chamber, and check the O-ring seats, then reassemble and repeat the leak test.

What Good Looks Like, and What to Ask For

On the factory side, the checks that matter run on every unit rather than on a sample. ZHONGHE water-tests 100% of production for roughly 10 to 15 seconds per unit, applies leak checks at 0.5MPa in selected processes with the spray face held vertical, and has O-rings inspected by AI camera at the supplier. Ask what the per-unit check covers on a multi-mode head, since exercising one mode is not the same as exercising all of them.

Ask for the things a bench cannot give you. A salt spray report on the plating for the specific finish, a cycle test method and pass criterion for the selector agreed at sample stage rather than after the first container, and the inspection criteria that will govern the shipment. Mode cross-talk and selector indexing belong in those criteria alongside cosmetic and leak defects.

Finally, agree what happens to the approved sample. Sealing and labelling one unit at the factory and one at your end, photographed and dated, converts a later disagreement about colour, finish, or feel from a debate into a comparison.
