Find the Restriction Before You Buy Anything
Low shower pressure has four common causes at different distances from you. Blocked nozzles and a clogged filter washer are at the head. A kinked or collapsing hose is a metre away. A part-closed isolation valve is behind the wall. Genuinely low supply pressure is the building's problem. A new shower head fixes the first of those and can improve the feel of the last. It does nothing for the two in the middle.
Start with a measurement. Run the shower into a measuring jug for exactly ten seconds with the mixer fully open, then multiply by six for litres per minute. Under about six litres per minute is genuinely weak; ten to twelve is a conventional head running normally. Write the number down, because it is the only way to know later whether anything you did actually helped.
- Run the jug test and record litres per minute before changing anything.
- Open a basin tap and a kitchen tap. If those are weak too, the supply is the problem, not the shower head, so skip to the last section.
- Watch the spray face while it runs. Stray jets, dry patches, or a lopsided pattern mean blocked nozzles, so soak the head in vinegar or citric acid and rub the nozzles clear.
- Unscrew the head and check for a small mesh or plastic filter washer inside the nut. Rinse it. This tiny part collects grit and is a frequent invisible cause of weak flow.
- Straighten the hose fully, look for kinks behind the holder, and squeeze along its length feeling for a soft or collapsed section.
- Find the isolation valve on the shower supply and confirm it is fully open. A valve left half turned after past work is common.
- Repeat the jug test with the head removed, running straight from the hose. Strong there and weak through the head means the head is the restriction; weak both ways means the limit is upstream.
The Flow Restrictor Question
Many shower heads contain a small plastic insert, often coloured, that limits how much water can pass. It sits just inside the inlet, and removing it does raise flow. Two things are worth knowing first. In the United States the federal maximum for a shower head is 2.5 gallons per minute and the voluntary WaterSense specification sets 2.0 or less; other markets set their own rules and some tie water charges or rebates to them. Removing a restrictor can put an installation outside what is permitted where you live and may affect a warranty, so check your local rule and only remove it where that is legal.
The practical point matters too. On a well-designed head the restrictor is not what makes a shower feel weak. A head that fires water through many small nozzles gives a fast, dense spray at modest volume, so pulling the restrictor mostly raises the water bill. If the shower still feels weak with it out, the head design is the issue.
When a Different Shower Head Genuinely Helps
Water leaving a small hole moves faster than water leaving a large one at the same supply pressure. That is the whole mechanism behind heads marketed as high pressure. A face plate with dozens of fine nozzles turns modest household pressure into a dense, quick spray that feels much stronger than the same volume spread across a wide rain face. It adds no pressure to the supply, which is fixed by the building.
For a low-pressure home that gives a clear rule: choose a compact head with a small, densely nozzled face, and be wary of large rain heads and wide multi-mode faces that spread a limited volume thinly. If you want modes, pick a head whose concentrated setting uses a small central cluster. When It Is the Plumbing
If every outlet in the house is weak, the shower head is a bystander. Common causes are a partly closed main stop valve, a failing pressure-reducing valve, a gravity system with too little height above the shower, scaled-up pipework in an older property, or low mains pressure in the street. Electric and mixer showers also have their own inlet filters that block.
Call a plumber if pressure dropped suddenly rather than gradually, if hot is weak while cold is fine or the reverse, if a stop valve will not turn, or if you suspect a leak. Pumps and boosters are a genuine fix in some systems and unsuitable in others, including where rules restrict pumping from a mains supply, so that is a conversation for a plumber who can see the system.
