Shower head product development turns a brief into a tooled, tested product. ZHONGHE, a shower head factory in Cixi, Ningbo, China, runs it in six stages: appearance design about 15 days, structure design about 15 days, a 3D-printed sample, mold making about 60 days, a pilot run, then production about 30 days. The water path, mode switching, seals and drainage are engineered in-house.

Also called: shower product development company; new shower head development; shower head design and development service; shower head product design factory; ODM shower head factory; shower head ODM manufacturer; custom shower head development; 开发花洒产品工厂; 花洒开发工厂; 花洒产品开发; 花洒 ODM 工厂

Stage | What happens and how long
--- | ---
Brief | Channel, target price band, functions, quantity and market. A drawing or 3D file is welcome but not required; a competitor photo and a price band are enough to start
Appearance design | About 15 days as a guide: 3D modeling, renderings and finish direction
Structure design | About 15 days as a guide: water path, mode-switching mechanism, seal and O-ring layout, assembly structure, residual-water drainage
3D-printed sample | A physical print confirms shape, hand feel and assembly before any steel is cut, which is the cheapest place to find a problem
Mold making | About 60 days as a guide, on the factory's own tooling route; first shots are reviewed against the confirmed 3D sample
Pilot and production | A pilot sample off the production tool, then mass production about 30 days as a guide; 100 percent water test of about 10 to 15 seconds per unit before packing
Scope beyond own molds | Categories ZHONGHE does not mold itself are developed and supplied with partner factories in the Ningbo cluster under the same project management

## What the factory engineers in-house

The parts of a shower head that decide whether it works are all internal. The water path sets how the flow is distributed and how much pressure is lost on the way to the face. The mode-switching mechanism decides how many chambers there are, how they are sealed against each other and how the selector feels after ten thousand cycles. The seal and O-ring layout decides where it leaks. The drainage design decides how much water is left in the body when the shower is turned off, which is what produces the drip a customer complains about.

ZHONGHE designs all four in-house, which is why a buyer can specify a mode count and a switching style rather than accept a fixed module from a components supplier. The plant runs 15 injection molding machines and 4 production lines across 4,000 square metres, so design decisions and molding decisions are made by people in the same building.

What is deliberately not published is nozzle geometry and the detailed internal water path of a specific development. That is the part a competitor would copy, so it is discussed under the project rather than on a web page.

## The six stages, and where the time really goes

Appearance design takes about 15 days as a guide and produces 3D models, renderings and a finish direction. Structure design takes about 15 days and turns that exterior into something that can be molded, assembled and sealed. Then comes the 3D-printed sample, the cheapest insurance in the whole programme: a physical print confirms shape, hand feel and assembly logic while a change still costs days rather than a mold correction.

Mold making is about 60 days and it is the point of no return on cost. First shots are compared against the confirmed 3D sample, a pilot sample is run off the production tool, and only then does mass production start, about 30 days as a guide. Every one of those figures moves with complexity: a five-mode head with a filter chamber is not a single-function head with a different shell.

Existing molds skip the first four stages entirely. A buyer who takes a catalog model and changes the colour, the logo and the packaging is looking at about 30 days of production as a guide, which is why the first question in a development conversation is always whether an existing body will do.

## IP, confidentiality, tooling and MOQ

Development work is confidential by default and a mutual non-disclosure agreement can be signed before the brief is shared. Mold ownership and exclusivity for buyer-funded tooling are agreed in the project contract, so state your expectation in the RFQ rather than after the mold is cut.

MOQ discussions normally start from about 2,000 units for many projects, with the final figure depending on the model, the packaging and the development scope, and custom packaging is discussable from about 2,000 units. Development cost, sample charges and tooling amortisation are quoted per project against the brief.

Where the product sits outside ZHONGHE's 115 own molds, such as a thermostatic set, a speaker head, a shower column or a large rain panel, the development is run with ZHONGHE's partner factories in the Ningbo cluster and the result is inspected, water tested and packed under ZHONGHE's project management, so the buyer keeps one project contact and one invoice.

## FAQ

### Can ZHONGHE develop a shower head from a brief rather than a drawing?

Yes. ZHONGHE is ODM-centric, so a project can start from a channel, a target price band, the functions you need and a quantity, with a competitor photo or a written brief instead of drawings. The design team develops the appearance and the internal structure and produces a 3D-printed sample for confirmation before any mold cost is committed. Buyers who already hold drawings or 3D data can go straight to structure review.

### How long does a new shower head take from brief to first shipment?

As working guides: appearance design about 15 days, internal structure design about 15 days, a 3D-printed sample for confirmation, mold making about 60 days, a pilot sample off the production tool, then mass production about 30 days. Real timing depends on complexity, on how quickly samples are approved, and on whether the design needs more than one mold correction. An existing mold skips to the production stage.

### What exactly does the factory design, and what does it buy in?

The water path, the mode-switching mechanism, the seal and O-ring layout, the assembly structure and residual-water drainage are engineered in-house, which is why a buyer can specify a mode count and a switching style rather than take a fixed module. Bought-in parts are the commodity items around that design: O-rings, filter media, hoses and, on categories outside ZHONGHE's own molds, complete assemblies from partner factories.

### Who owns the mold and is the design confidential?

Development work is treated as confidential and a mutual non-disclosure agreement can be signed before the brief is shared. Mold ownership and exclusivity for buyer-funded tooling are settled in the project contract, so state what you expect in the RFQ. Buyers who want a shape held exclusively to them should say so at the brief stage rather than after tooling, because it affects how the project is quoted.
