## Know Which Joint You Are Making

A handheld set has three connections and only one normally involves tools. The head screws onto the hose. The hose screws onto a shower arm or a mixer elbow. The holder fixes to the wall or a rail. Most installation problems come from treating all three as the same joint.

The head-to-hose joint is a G1/2 parallel thread, also written BSPP and defined in ISO 228, about 27 mm across on the head side. Parallel threads do not seal on the thread. Tightening the nut simply pulls two faces together, and the seal is made by a rubber washer squeezed between them or a cone nut seating into the head inlet. That is why the joint assembles hand-tight, comes apart again without damage, and needs no tape.

The wall connection can differ. North American shower arms carry a 1/2 inch NPT tapered thread that seals by thread interference and does need PTFE tape or pipe sealant. The two systems look similar enough to start engaging and are not interchangeable. If a connection binds within the first turn, stop. Forcing a mismatched thread ruins both parts, and a cross-threaded plastic nut cannot be recovered.

## Fitting the Head, Hose, and Holder

Work from the wall outwards and test each joint before moving to the next, so a leak has only one possible source when you find it.

1. Turn the shower off at the mixer. If you are working at the wall, close the isolation valve or the main stop valve first.
2. Unscrew the old head and hose by hand and keep them until the new set is proven. Have a towel ready for water left in the hose.
3. Identify the thread at the wall outlet. A parallel thread has straight sides and pairs with a washer; a tapered NPT thread narrows towards its tip and needs two or three clockwise turns of PTFE tape.
4. Connect the hose to the outlet. On a parallel thread check the washer is flat in the nut and tighten by hand, adding a small nudge with a cloth-wrapped wrench only if it weeps. On NPT, tighten with a wrench until snug.
5. Check the head end of the hose. It normally has a conical nut, and some hoses carry a small filter washer here. Make sure the washer or cone is present and square before starting the thread.
6. Screw the head on by hand, clockwise. It should turn freely through several full turns. Stop at hand-tight, because a wrench crushes the washer and can crack a plastic nut.
7. Run the water and watch both joints for a full minute, turning the head so the joint faces you and a slow weep is visible.
8. Position the holder so the head hangs clear of the wall and the hose keeps a gentle curve, mark it, check it is level, then fix it by drilling, adhesive plate, or suction cup.

## Holders and the No-Drill Options

A holder screwed into tile is the most secure option and the most permanent. Drill tile with the correct bit, at low speed, without hammer action, and use plugs suited to the wall behind. Get the position right before drilling: high enough that the head hangs clear, and set so the hose leaves in a smooth curve rather than folding.

Where drilling is not an option, suction cup and adhesive holders both work with caveats. A suction base needs a smooth, non-porous, genuinely flat surface, so it holds well on glass or a large tile face and poorly on textured tile or across a grout line. An adhesive backing plate bonds to a clean, dry, degreased surface and needs its full curing time, often 24 hours, before anything hangs on it. Rushing the cure is the usual reason these fail.

Treat weight limits as approximate rather than guaranteed, and rely on them less as the surface gets less ideal. Steam, temperature swings, and soap film all work against both fixings over time, so check a no-drill holder periodically and reseat it if it feels loose. ### Do I need plumber's tape on a shower head?

Not on the head-to-hose joint. That is a G1/2 parallel thread which seals on a rubber washer or a cone face, so tape adds nothing and can stop the faces seating squarely. Use PTFE tape only on a tapered thread such as the 1/2 inch NPT shower arm used in North America.

### How tight should a shower head be?

Hand-tight. The washer does the sealing, so extra force compresses it out of shape, can crack a plastic nut, and makes removal harder later. If a hand-tight joint weeps, the answer is a new washer or a properly seated one, not more torque.

### Will a G1/2 shower head fit in the United States?

For a handheld set, yes. The hose is the conversion point: its supply end mates with the 1/2 inch NPT shower arm and its head end carries a standard G1/2 cone nut. A fixed head screwing directly onto the arm is the case that needs an NPT inlet or an adapter.
