Run a fingertip across the dry face: scale feels gritty and slightly raised. The useful part is that limescale is a chemical problem, not a mechanical one. It dissolves in mild acid, which is why kitchen white vinegar works as well as anything sold for the job.

## Cleaning a Shower Head Step by Step

These steps cover a handheld head you can unscrew. For a fixed overhead unit, skip the removal and use the bag method in step three.

1. Turn the shower off at the mixer and let the head drain.
2. Unscrew the head from the hose by hand, anticlockwise. A handheld head uses a parallel G1/2 thread that seals on a washer, so it should come free without tools. If it is stiff, wrap the nut in a cloth first.
3. Cover the spray face with white vinegar in a bowl, or two tablespoons of citric acid powder dissolved in half a litre of warm water. For a fixed head, fill a sandwich bag with the same solution and tie it over the head.
4. Soak for one to two hours. Heavy scale can go overnight, but do not leave a plated or painted finish soaking for days.
5. Rub the nozzles with your thumb. Soft rubber nozzles flex and the softened scale pops out of the hole. Rigid molded nozzles need a soft brush worked across the face.
6. Rinse the head, running water backwards through the outlet where you can, so debris comes out rather than going further in.

Abrasives are the second mistake. Scouring pads, wire wool, and gritty cream cleaners take the scale off and the finish with it, leaving a dull patch that does not come back. Chrome plating is thin and matte black or brushed finishes scuff even more easily. Do not poke nozzles with a pin either: on rubber it is unnecessary, and on molded plastic it deforms the hole and permanently spoils the pattern.

## How Often to Repeat It
